John Tyson II, PE is the founder and president of Trilion Quality Systems, a manufacturer and developer of advanced optical measurement systems.  He has more than 30 years experience in the field of laser based and optical inspection methods of holography, ESPI, shearography, digital image correlation and photogrammetry, as well as six patents in the field.  John graduated from Duke University (1981) with a BSE in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and is a professional engineer in the state of Pennsylvania.  He lectures extensively, has written and reviewed peer-reviewed journal articles, and has chaired association committees.  He authored Optical Leaking Testing Method in MIL-STD-883.  Mr. Tyson is co-founder and twice Chairman of the Laser Methods Group of ASNT (American Society for Nondestructive Testing).  He has also worked on JEDEC and ASME committees for furthering the standards in the industry.

Timothy Schmidt – Vice President

Tim Schmidt is one of the most experienced practitioners of 3D image correlation in the world, and he has more than twenty-five years of experience with full-field displacement and strain measurement.  He received a BSE degree with a major in Mechanical Engineering from Cooper Union in 1989.  In addition, Tim conducted part-time postgraduate research with the Laser and Optical Engineering Research Group at the University of Aberdeen from 1994-1996, using pulsed laser interferometry to detect corrosion and cracking in semi-monocoque aircraft structures.  Tim was Senior Investigator on the DARPA SBIR Phase I, II and III contracts “Development of an Optical/Acoustic Method for the Remote Non-Destructive Inspection of Composite Materials”, Sept. 1995-April 2000., and was Principal Investigator on the SBIR Phase I and Phase II contracts “Revolutionary Materials Research Technology for High-Strain-Rate Ordnance Research”, sponsored by the Air Force Research Lab Munitions Directorate at Eglin Air Force Base, to develop high speed 3D image correlation for high rate Hopkinson Bar testing of ductile metals (ended Sept 2008).  NASA retained Tim as consultant, through Trilion, to provide ongoing support of ballistic impact testing applications for the Return to Flight program.  Tim was part of the group that won a Space Flight Awareness Team Award for photogrammetry measurements during the ET-137 tanking test at Launch Complex 39A in December 2010, which provided valuable radial deflection data to help resolve the stringer cracking issue that delayed the launch of STS-133.  Astronaut Mike Foreman presented Tim with a Silver Snoopy award in November 2011, for his leadership of that project.
